The tavern called "At the seven Swabians" is hereby opening its hospitality towards you. Sit down at the table and let us refresh you with beer, wine and mead as well as feed you with dishes that bid abundance of taste and smell. Let the landlord fill your mugs over and over again and become charmed by the music and lovely maids - we are in the year 1493!
Both the Hussite wars and the Hungarian wars are history now. And when King Vladislav Jagiello, also took the Hungarian crown, there is at last peace in Bohemia. Vladislav is though a strange ruler - he loves women but doesn't want to get married, he wants to rule in a strict way, but he isn't able to get his will through. Matias Korvin, the King of Hungary, was another kind of man. Solid, harsh and firm - but this cost him his life. He became so angry when they gave him figs that weren't cleaned, that his heart got broken. And because he had no legal heir, it was Vladislav who was chosen to be his successor.
If you come to our tavern during evening time it can happen that you'll meet the builders Reid and Spies, or some of the stonecutters and masons from their works. Also Hanus z Ruze, who is in charge of the clock (orloy) at the Prague Old Town, can be seen here over a mug of mead. Don't talk to him - he is rather morose and doesn't like to be disturbed in his thoughts.
Here at the Lesser Town it was for a long time waste and unpleasant. The churches and the monasteries have been plundered and the seat of the archbishop was burned down together with large parts of the town. Scamps and drunken domestics were out during the nights and honourable men and women had to guard both their lives and purse. Only recently it became peaceful times in the country and the town have been build up again. And even though it isn't such a long time ago when our life was rough and hard, it is our belief that with the help of God the Golden ages of our country will be remembered and live on in our thoughts!
AAround the world the situation is difficult. Maxmilian l. of Habsburg, who calls himself "the chosen roman emperor" is dreaming his knight dreams and looking for the French possessions in Italy, while the French king, the little, ugly Karl Vlll calls together the rests of his army. Also Francesco Gonzaga gathers his troops against France - there are no peaceful times in the Apennines. Spain is marked by the holy inquisition and persecution of Jews and in Italy the Borgia-family is fully occupied with forging their plots. Even the Medicis are planning their come back. Leonardo is gathering the faces for the Holy Communion while Michelangelo Buonarrotti has recently ended apprenticeship by Ghirlandai. It's eight years since the Portuguese Diaz sailed around the Cap of the Good Hope and precisely a year ago Christopher Columbus from Genoa has found a new way to India. God knows this will decrease the prices for the spices. If it really is India...
So, brave people, we have told you what has happened here around. But enough talking - take your mugs and drink, eat and forget about all your sorrows and worries. | | |
